Default What's worse? If Asparukh was a Gypsy or a Turk?

If he was a Persian/Iranian, then Bulgarians would have to embrace and accept Gypsies as their Iranic brothers, acknowledge them as kin with a common origin, and accept them as they would a normal Bulgarian.

If he was a Turk, then Bulgarians would have to admit that they're vaguely related to the people who enslaved and raped Bulgaria for 500 years without interruption and that they're less "European" than their neighbours.

    Pick your poison.

And no, you can't pussy out by claiming to be a Thracian or some other fake lame bullshit excuse.

Asparukh was a Nintendo gaming console that evil whitey Bulgarians stole and said theirs.

His name is obviously of Turkish origin, as Proto-Bulgarians were Onogurs.

People should start making a difference between Turkic and Turkish. The Turks were not even formed as an ethnicity when Bulgaria was created.

MihailE, you have a number of serious issues. You need to see someone qualified to fix your problems, either a psychiatrist or an exorcist, I can't really decide.

I have seen him writing in Bulgarian once I think. A true a grammatical slaughter. My eyes bled as my ancestors were turning over in their graves. Google translate would have been less of a torture!

Well our educational system sucks, so when I was in primary school we studied that the proto Bulgarians were "a small Turkic horde" but that's because of the communist influence over our historical memory. Nowadays we have official genetic and historical studies which prove that the proto Bulgarians were more likely Iranic or a mix between Iranics and Turkics. When it comes to genetics though we do not have any Turkic influence, we are a mix of Slavs and Thracians (native Balkans)

Asparukh means shining horse, asp(a) is widely used in iranic languages for the word horse, while rukh means to shine.

What amazes me even more is the actor playing Asparukh looks more Iranian than "Turkic"
