I think it's meant to make people live in the outdoors as much as possible with minimal inside space to rely on. Kind of survivalist functionalism maybe? Who knows?

Is this a summer cottage uniquely or is it used in the winter as well?

Perhaps the area can be closed with sliding doors?

The builders are Huttunen-Lipasti-Pakkanen Architects btw.

I wouldn't want to go sliding around on those rocks in wintertime!

This definitely looks like a summertime weekend getaway type of place.

I was kind of wondering if Finns were as crazy as Canucks and scale all manner of rock and ice and snow just to get to their retreat.

Certainly summertime, holyday home. Number 5 room still looks like completely insane to me. If it would be next to sauna it would have some idea. Burning fire there after sauna and chilling with beer (and frying some sausage) while the soon-to-be-frozen Gulf of Finland is raging next to you. Perhaps even having a small scale crayfish party (doors closed) ?

Otherwise this seems like completely un-necessary space to me.

And then breaking your skull against those rocks on your way to the outhouse after way, way too many schnapps.

Maybe that pic is of the actual sauna itself? It seems as though the windows are fixed. I dunno!

Actually I was right, according to the designers' website the sauna is in a separate building.

Villa Mecklin is located in the Finnish archipelago. It sits in a small depressions in the rock, its sheltered terrace extending over the summit of the rock. In connection with the shoreline sauna, there is also a stove-heated cabin for guests.

The building materials selected for Villa Mecklin are uncontrived, basic ones suited for the archipelago. All wood surfaces have been left untreated and will turn grey naturally.

The Villa was built in 2008. The floor area of the villa is 70m2 and the sauna is 20m2.

It looks like someone will scold you if you actually enjoy the surrounding scenery and then track a little mud when you get home.

As for the principle of cottages.. is this place conducive for what the English call "cottaging"?

Sort of, more like second home (which you use 1.5 month). Price estimate would be around 200.000 - 250.000 €.
