It is likely he flew to/from Portugal to get back home from a destination that he couldn't use a Galician airport to reach.

Unfortunately, there aren't many direct flights from Galicia to Europe. For example, I had to flight to London to get Istanbul (I think the flight between London and Istanbul was with Easyjet).
