UNESCO declares Spanish archaeological site of Atapuerca as "site of Exceptional Universal Value" --China Economic NetUnesco on Friday named the famous site of Atapuerca, which is close to the city of Burgos in northern Spain, a site of "Exceptional Universal Value."
In making their decision, the organization valued both the scientific and education aspects of the site, where possibly the earliest hominid remains to be found in Europe have been discovered, along with numerous fossils of the animals they shared their
habitat with between 800,000 to 400,000 years ago.
The dig led to the discovery of a new human species, named Homo Anteccesor, which is thought to be ancestral to Neanderthal man.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the World Patrimony Committee in Rome and follows on that taken 15 years ago when the Atapuerca excavations were declared "Patrimony of the Human Race."
