It depends what you call by "darkness".
I will only talk about the south east that I know quite well for example.
No native has a pseudo north african or middle eastern look for example.
Nonetheless only about 1/3 of people have light eyes and 25 % have light hair but most people nonetheless have standard light skin.
So for northern standard which means often dark hair and eyes yes we are "dark" ; nonetheless we don't possess the "wog" types associated with southern Europe for sure.

That is not true. People from Aquitanie are closer to northern spaniards, specially the Basques, Navarrese and people from Provence are closer to northern Italians, than to northern French. I've also seen the genetics of some other occitans, even as far as Limousin, and were closer to northern Spain.

I think for every Arabid Lebanese you can find a Nordic southern French who cannot pass in Sicily or on Crete.

There are many italians in Provence and northern italy was a gaullish colony before roman conquest.
