The South Region of Brazil (Portuguese: Regiăo Sul do Brasil) is one of the five regions of Brazil. It includes the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and covers 576,409.6 km ˛, being the smallest portion of the country, occupying only about 6.76% of the territory of Brazil. Its whole area is smaller than that of the state of Minas Gerais, in Southeast Brazil, for example. It is a great tourist, economic and cultural pole. It borders Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as well as Centre-West Region, Southeast Region, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Climate
Southern Brazil has subtropical or temperate climate. The annual average temperatures vary between 12°C (53.6°F) and 22°C (71.6°F). It snows in the mountain ranges.
Languages
Portuguese, the official language of Brazil, is spoken by the entire population. In the south countryside, dialects of German or Italian origins are also spoken. The predominant dialects are Hunsrückisch and Venetian (or Talian). In Rio Grande do Sul and Curitiba there are some Yiddish speakers. In the northern region of Paraná there are some Japanese speakers. In the region around Ponta Grossa there are also some Dutch speakers. There are Polish language and Ukrainian language speakers in Paraná as well.
Culture
The artistic culture of southern Brazil is very rich, precisely because he had been influenced in various colonies of immigrants, such as Germans, Italians, Poles and Ukrainians. The settlers were the first to arrive in the area previously inhabited by Amerindian peoples.
The Jesuit missions were founded in western Parana in the sixteenth century before the pioneers expel to the region of Rio Grande do Sul and Argentina, leading to mate culture to these regions. Called Real del Guaira Republic and its capital was Ontiveros (current Guaira - PR), the third largest city in South America at the time after Asuncion and Buenos Aires.
The gaucho culture is very strong and influence throughout the region. The main manifestations are in cousine, literature and dance.
Curitiba was elected in 2003 the "Capital of Culture of the Americas" by CAC-ACC entity and hosted the event COP 8 MOP 3 of the UN 20th to 31st March 2006.
The South region of Brazil has been portrayed as geopolitical parody in the encyclopedia humorous Wiki as the fictional country called the southern United States, nation composed of the three states of the region with their respective names: Nördregion (Paraná), Mittelregion (Santa Catarina) and Südregion (Rio Grande do Sul).
Cousine
The Barreado is the dish typical Caboclo the coast of Paraná, prepared with beef, bacon and seasonings. The dish is placed in a clay pot which is buried and about which will light a fire. The dish is so slow cooked for 12 hours, until the meat fall apart. Many Morretes restaurants offer this delicious gastronomic dish.
The Boi no Rolete, o Porco no Rolete e o Carneiro no Buraco are also typical of the Western Parana dishes, with large festivals throughout the year.
In the Santa Catarina cuisine are traditional fish mush in the South and in the North, Marrecada. In the capital, the main is the shrimp sequence, a series of various dishes prepared with crayfish. In the Rio Grande do Sul the barbecue with coarse salt and the mate are the most common.
The barbecue can be done on the floor of the oven, on the grill and in many places it is consumed very often by gauchos even on weekdays, and usually on weekends by people in the southeast region. But the mate doesn't have time to be consumed, and the taste is like a tea, but stronger and less sweet flavor.
