They are Slavs, but with a paleo-Balkanic substrate. Differences in languages as evidence - the Balkan Slavs use a lot of consonant clusters (like the native Caucasus peoples), this indicates the influence on them in the past of some ethnic groups that were close to the inhabitants of the Caucasus. The Russians have the opposite situation - there are many vowels, this is most likely a Baltic and Finno-Ugric (and probably Eastern Iranic in the South) substrate.
I wonder what substrate the West Slavs have and what balance of consonants and vowels was in the Proto-Slavic language?
Are Lithuanians the most pure Slavs?

Bulgarians are Slavs because they speak a Slavic language, but the Slavs can look really different. I realized this when I met Bulgarian students in the dorm.

Bulgarians are not Slavs, and Russians are not Slavs and Serbs and Polish are not Slavs. Since Slavism is primarily a Slavic religion. The genetics of both Bulgarians and Russians is Slavic. Since the Slavs are Europeans who believe in Veles and Perun.

All Slavs have a Paleobalkan substrate to one degree or another. The Slavs are a direct continuation of the Indo-Europeans. Therefore, we are all Slavs, but with a different substrate. And the first Slavs lived in Khvalynsk and today we call them the culture of Corded Ware. These people spoke Slavic and believed in Veles.

I was looking at pictures of the Bulgarians who chanted racist stuff against English players in the last match and many looked quite MENA ironically.

Ironically if you post the same crowd of Basques or Spaniards under similar light, the number of MENA looking people will be double or triple.
