They are Slavs, but with a paleo-Balkanic substrate. Differences in languages as evidence - the Balkan Slavs use a lot of consonant clusters (like the native Caucasus peoples), this indicates the influence on them in the past of some ethnic groups that were close to the inhabitants of the Caucasus. The Russians have the opposite situation - there are many vowels, this is most likely a Baltic and Finno-Ugric (and probably Eastern Iranic in the South) substrate.
I wonder what substrate the West Slavs have and what balance of consonants and vowels was in the Proto-Slavic language?
