Germany has mini-jobs of 400 euros, that's why you have lower unemployment. But these jobs would be be illegal in Spain.

CAF awarded Arriva Rail North rolling stock £490 Million contract

Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF is to supply 281 new vehicles worth £490m for the next Northern franchise, leasing company Eversholt Rail announced on January 22.

The order comprises 31 three-car and 12 four-car electric multiple-units, and 25 two-car and 30 three-car diesel multiple-units. The 160 km/h units will be part of CAF’s Civity family, and all are scheduled to enter service by December 2018.

The new rolling stock will enable the fleet of 1980s Class 14x Pacer DMUs to be withdrawn from the Northern franchise, and potentially redeployed to other operators.

The new Northern franchise is scheduled to begin on April 1. Chris Burchell, Managing Director of Arriva’s UK Trains Division, said the rolling stock contract involved a ‘high specification and demanding timetable for delivery’, adding that he hoped that the announcement ‘once again makes clear our determination to deliver on our promises to passengers.’

Spanish-made trams to run on Canberra's city to Gungahlin light rail line

The ACT government's announcement of the Canberra Metro consortium as the winning bidder for the city to Gungahlin tram line confirms new rolling stock will be built and maintained by Spanish firm Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, also known as CAF.

Each tram will include two dedicated wheelchair spaces, storage room for four bikes, 12 priority seats for passengers with special needs, handrails and grab rails for safety. Passengers will have access to free wireless internet on board.

Promotional materials describe the trams as "cheerful and suitable for this important city, making a positive impact on the city pride of all Canberrans". Designs could feature events such as Floriade, Summernats, and the Canberra Balloon Spectacular.

The trams are described and built for bi-directional operation, with climate control and a "full length open plan passenger saloon" for safety and visibility. Energy efficient electrical systems will be in place on board, including LED lighting.

Safety cameras will operate inside the trams and passengers will have access to emergency help points to speak to the driver or an operations control centre.

Secure free storage units will be available at the line's 13 passenger stops and same level boarding will allow for easy access. The stops are being designed to shield passengers from the capital's changing weather, including rain, sun and wind.

CAF's trams promise "avant-garde design and flexibility" to give city networks their own unique identity. Canberra's trams will include a design unique to the city.

The trams will include hybrid, regenerative technology that allows for kinetically developed energy from breaking to be stored in roof-mounted super-capacitors for wire-free services, as required by the National Capital Authority if the line is extended to the Russell precinct.

On-board energy storage captures braking energy, allowing trams to run without wires between stops and helping energy efficiency.

Prototype of an innovative solution by Gamesa company for “offgrid” facilities with installed capacity of over 2MW

Facilities that are remote from the grid can now significantly reduce the use of diesel generators by incorporating the power of sun, wind and battery storage into the system.

There is a conventional opinion that in order to ensure uninterrupted power supply of facilities that are remote from the main power grids (“offgrid”), precisely diesel generators are used as stand-alone sources of megawatt-class power.

The Spanish company Gamesa, one of the major manufacturers of wind turbines, on 10 May 2016 introduced an innovative solution for energy supply of “offgrid” facilities.

    The system combines four elements:
    - wind power;
    - solar power;
    - diesel generators;
    - battery storage.

The introduced prototype of the system has become the first in the market, having a total installed capacity of over 2 MW, and providing the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective generation of electricity. Special software developed by Gamesa produces the optimal combination of each technology, establishing a balance in the project, depending on the specific requirements for the necessary volume of power generation, besides the diesel fuel consumption is minimized.

Spanish technology for large tankers of the future

On April 26 Navantia began the construction of the first of the tankers Suezmax (those who can pass through the Suez canal, with a capacity of up to 200,000 tons) that the public shipyard signed with Ondimar transport maritime LDA (shipping company of the Ibaizabal group) of a total of four.

Contracts that translates into 3 million hours of work for the manufacturer and the industry side of the Bay of Cadiz and the ría de Ferrol shipyard. A landmark bearing in mind which is its return to the civil construction after 20 years focused only on civil business. Spanish technology sends as well in the large oil of the future. The introduction of these shipping meant a real revolution at the end of the 19th century, as many of the world’s economies are dependent on business known as ‘black gold’, and is the only way of transporting large amounts of crude oil. But, how is built a tanker? they are big words.

Intended for the loading of crude oil or byproducts, currently requires its double hull construction. More than one lesson was the experience of the Prestige, sunk off the Galician coast on November 13, 2002. The reason is none other than the monocoque design presents a greater sensitivity to damage in accidents and, in consequence, to cause devastating spills from the environmental point of view.

Many are the guidelines used in this type of construction for your design. A job that requires special planning by the team of engineers responsible for the initial phase of the project, as each of the pieces shaped by computer should be classified in detail to then play is life-size. Given its size, this type of ships are built by blocks which are then assembled with cranes in dry dock.

Scientists in Spain make giant leap in accuracy with industrial robots

The world’s purportedly biggest robot has been constructed in a research centre near Zaragoza, Spain. Engineers have used lasers to make a record-breaking industrial robot – with amazing levels of accuracy.

The robotic platform measures 20-metres long, six metres wide and five metres high and is mounted on a simple structure controlled by computers.

A laser track allows a continuous monitoring of the position of the robot.

Laser beams create 1,000 scans per second to achieve high levels of accuracy in the robot’s performances.

José Antonio Dieste, an industrial engineer at AITIIP, says:Average classical machines base their accuracy on mechanical systems. So whenever the temperature changes, for instance, these machines are prone to making mistakes.

“And the bigger these machines are, the more mistakes they can make. What we have tried to do here is to substitute that mechanical approach [with lasers].

“So we are able to monitor in real time where the bit [of the machine] always is and correct also in real time the robot´s position.”

Researchers think the robot can be accurate within minus 0.4 mm when working on 100-metre long parts

That would make the robot suitable to perform extremely challenging and technical operation on big surfaces; This would be an ideal working tool for the factories of the future, scientists believe.

Facebook, Microsoft, Telefonica Team Up for new Mid-Atlantic Cable

On what do Facebook and Microsoft agree? Apparently, on the need for a new transatlantic cable between Spain and Virginia. The MAREA cable system was announced yesterday, with the software and social networking giants working with Telefonica's Telxius subsidiary to make it happen.

MAREA will supposedly feature 8 fiber pairs and have an initial theoretical capacity of a whopping 160Tbbs. It will stretch 6,600km and land in Bilbao in northern Spain and in Virginia Beach. That route takes a less popular southern route to Europe a bit north of the one taken by the aging Columbus system.

The Virginia Beach landing can be better understood if one recalls that Telefonica's BRUSA cable hooking up North and South America will also be landing there. Just last week we learned that Telefonica has already bought a 3.5 acre site there for a 20,000 square foot building for its cable landing station and data center there. In addition, fiber operators like SummitIG and Lumos Networks have been adding fiber infrastructure throughout southern and central Virginia that will surely help with the backhaul.

Sener, Acciona and TSK built solar power plant in south africa sets record for round-the-clock electricity supply

Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Power Plant delivers six days of continuous, full-load electricity – an African record Johannesburg, June 8, 2016 – A SENER, ACCIONA and TSK built Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant in South Africa has set a new African record for the continuous, round the clock supply of electricity. Within the first month of commercial operation, the newly-inaugurated 50 MW Bokpoort CSP plant, produced electricity for a continuous period of 161 hours, equivalent to almost six days.

CSP technology is considered an intermittent source of power which supplies electricity during daylight hours, when demand is highest. Nevertheless, Bokpoort’s design enables it to continue supplying electricity long after the sun has set thanks to a molten salt energy storage facility that can accumulate 9.3 hours of electricity production, the highest power storage facility on the African continent.

Round the clock electricity supply from a solar power plant is a significant milestone for South Africa and for the renewable industry as a whole, as it allows CSP technology to approximate the continuous power supply of conventional technologies such as hydroelectric, thermal or gas-fired power plants.

Indra wins Skyguide contract to deliver surveillance radars at two Swiss airports

Indra has received a €6m contract from Swiss air navigation services provider (ANSP) Skyguide to install primary S band surveillance radars at Switzerland’s Geneva and Zurich international airports.

Under the terms of the deal, Indra will deploy its surveillance systems to support approach and landing manoeuvers.

The new surveillance radars will also enhance safety, ensuring high passenger capacity and seamless traffic flow at the airports.

Indra will replace existing airport equipment with the radars, which feature the latest developments to help eliminate interference caused by wind energy turbines.

The new technology also enhance identification of adverse climatological conditions.

In a bid to bag the current contract, Indra successfully demonstrated the high quality and effective performance levels of its systems.

Since early 2000, Indra has been working in collaboration with Skyguide to implement its NOVA advanced surface movement guidance and control systems (A-SMGCS) in Geneva and Zurich international airports.

The company has recently deployed a second surface movement radar in Geneva, while the major runway in Zurich is equipped with Indra’s distance measuring equipment (DME) system.

An additional total of 12 NORMARC instrument landing systems (ILS) have been installed at seven airports across Switzerland.

The company has so far deployed more than 200 primary and secondary radars worldwide.

Dragados awarded $756 million contact for new tube of Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

It’s a lot of money, people,” said Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Commission Chairman Frederick Stant during Wednesday morning’s big meeting.

There wasn’t much left to be said after more than three years of development on a second, parallel tunnel on the 17.6-mile link between Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore.

The vote to award Dragados USA a $756 million design-build contract was unanimous.

“OK, people, we bought it,” Stant said.

    Then, clapping.

It’s a major milestone in what will be a long slog until the project is done.

Construction of the Thimble Shoals parallel tunnel tube is expected to begin in October 2017 and take five years. Dragados will design the mile-long tunnel through next summer.

Bids initially came in higher than expected

The project cost is now $808 million for development, design, financing and construction. A $116 million contingency has been set aside on top of that.

The cost and scope of the project had to be scaled down significantly after three initial bids came in at more than $1 billion, hundreds of millions higher than expected.

BELGIUM: Brussels city transport operator STIB has awarded CAF a 12-year framework contract for the supply of metro trainsets. The agreement announced on August 2 covers a firm order for an initial 43 trainsets worth €353m to be delivered from 2019, with the option for STIB to order up to 47 additional trainsets during framework period.

The trainsets have been ordered a part of a wider project to modernise the metro, starting with lines 1 and 5. CAF said the ‘cutting-edge trains equipped with state-of-the-art technology’ would be ready for the planned migration from the metro’s current signalling system to CBTC.

STIB had previously awarded CAF a contract to supply 15 trainsets in 2004, and this was followed in 2009 by an order for an additional six trainsets. These are now in service on metro lines 1 and 5.

CAF said the latest order means it has won contracts worth in excess of €2bn during 2016, taking its backlog to more than €6·3bn.

Aries Ingeniería y Sistemas continues to be a key player in the development of CSP technology in China

Aries Ingeniería y Sistemas makes progress on its Owner’s Engineering (OE) contract signed with CGN Delingha Solar Energy Corporation, after the Chinese CSP developer launched a competitive tender process last year.

The Delingha project, first-of-its-kind in the People’s Republic of China, will be a 50megawatt (MW) concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) plant in the city of Delingha, Qinghai Province. The technology consists on capturing and concentrating the solar energy in an absorbing tube where the heat from the sun is transferred to liquid oil from which vapor is generated. This vapor will be then used to produce electricity in a turbine generator and stored in a molten salts thermal energy storage system with a capacity of 1300 MWh.

The plant will have a solar field of about 190 loops and a capacity of about 200 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity per year. With an expected inauguration next year, this project will be an important milestone for the sector worldwide and especially for the renewable energy industry of the region.

Talgo train clocks 180 kmph, breaks Indian record during trial

Agra: The Spanish-made Talgo train coaches reached a speed of 180 kmph during the second phase of trials between Mathura and Palwal on Wednesday, covering a distance of 86 km in 39 minutes. In the process it broke the record by an Indian train, previously held by Gatimaan Express at 160 kmph.

"Wednesday's trial was conducted with empty coaches. We will later use sandbags placed on the seats to simulate passenger weight. The train ran continuously at 180 kmph from Bhuteshwar to Rundhi stations, covering the distance in 39 minutes," said Dilip Kumar Singh, additional divisional railway manager (ADRM) of Agra.

Talgo is a leading Madrid-based manufacturer of semi-high speed (160-250 kmph) and high-speed (350 kmph) passenger trains. The nine-coach train used in Wednesday's trial was hauled by an Indian Railways' WDP-4 diesel engine with 4,500 HP capacity, manufactured at a Varanasi plant. The trial was supervised by engineers from Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO), Lucknow, and from Talgo.

"Today's successful achievement is a major milestone in railway history and it gets us closer to our dreams of having high-speed train service on the existing railway tracks," Singh added.

Massive offshore substation sets sail for Wikinger wind farm in Baltic Sea

One of the world's largest offshore substations has today begun its three week voyage from Cadiz in southern Spain to the German zone of the Baltic Sea.

Engineers from ScottishPower Renewables and Iberdrola supported the departure of the substation, dubbed 'Andalucía', which will form part of the 350MW Wikinger offshore wind farm that is currently under construction off the German coast.

The substation, built by Spanish state-owned shipbuilding company Navantia at the Puerto Real shipyard in Cadiz, is the first offshore substation to include two separate topsides - areas above the water line where control rooms and landing decks are housed.

The two areas are needed since the station will also be used by German electricity system operator 50Hertz to support its own offshore wind developments.

The steel structure of the substation weighs 4,550 tonnes alone, while its construction supported 700 jobs, according to ScottishPower.

The €1.4bn (£1bn) Wikinger wind farm will consist of 70 wind turbines spanning an area of around 34 square kilometres and is expected to provide enough power for 350,000 households when it comes online at the end of 2017.

Advocates of offshore wind farms have long argued larger wind turbines, wind farms, and substations will help to slash the cost of offshore wind power in the coming years through economies of scale and improved performance. Some developers are envisaging giant stations will allow operations and maintenance staff to live offshore, drastically reducing maintenance costs and reducing turbine downtime.

The launch follows the announcement this summer that two new offshore wind farms off the Dutch coast are set to deliver power at a record low cost of around £80/MWh.
