Macedonian Journalists remove illegal monument on Kajmakcalan, set up by Bulgarian soldiers
Thursday, 22 September 2016
A week ago, Bulgarian soldiers illegally entered Macedonian territory to erect a monument, apparently dedicated to Bulgarian soldiers who were killed on Kajmakcalan mountain in 1916.
Bulgaria's DM Nikolaj Nencev instead of reprimanding his soldiers for the illegal crossing, announced an award was coming for the "bravery" shown by his men.
As expected, Macedonia's Government had no comment nor did it send a demarche to official Sofia for the illegal border crossing of Bulgarian soldiers on Macedonian territory.
When the Government doesn't do anything or is simply ineffective, it is quite normal for the citizenry to act as Government and take matters in their hands.
Which is precisely what happened. Macedonian journalist M. Nedelkovski and his crew in quite difficult weather conditions and lack of roads made their way to the top of Kajmakcalan and removed the Bulgarian monument.
Unfortunately, with a Government that bows to foreign Embassies, Macedonians will have to take matters into their own hands much more often.
