Same reason Assad is being overthrown. To make way for chaos and weak nation states.

The truth is, Gaddafi treated his people like animals...well fed animals, but animals...so what happens when a caged animal is unleashed on you? It rips you to bits and sodomises you with a plunger.

Contrast that with the humane benevolent treatment Ben Ali gave the Tunisian people, so that when they rose up they werent savage enough and he was also humble enough to flee with what wealth he could and exile himself to Saudi Arabia. Gaddafi, like Assad and unlike the Tunisian (or even Mubarak or the Egyptian army, who did initially stand down to Morsi) were arrogant and tryannical enough to take the country down with them.


Only difference between Gaddafi getting sodomised and Assad not yet, is Assad still is useful for his Russo-Iranian patrons, while no one stood up for Libya.
