There's something warm, relaxing, very inviting, nostaligic, and extremely comforting about old English library decor with cherry-oak and mahogany wooden furniture, cosy log-fires, and warm rust-coloured walls, when reading books.

Exhibition at the British Library, London.

    James Cook: The Voyages

    Fri 27 Apr Tue 28 Aug 2018

Explore original maps, artworks and journals from the voyages

To mark 250 years since Captain James Cooks ship Endeavour set sail from Plymouth, this major exhibition will tell the story of Cooks three great voyages through original documents, many of which were produced by the artists, scientists and seamen on board the ship. From Cooks journal detailing the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle to handwritten log books, stunning artwork and intricate maps, chart the voyages, which spanned more than a decade, and explore the experiences of people on the ship and in the places visited.

Drawings by the Polynesian high priest and navigator Tupaia, who joined the first voyage at Tahiti and accompanied Cook to New Zealand and Australia, will be going on public display for the first time together, alongside works by expedition artists Sydney Parkinson, John Webber and William Hodges. Tupaias paintings include a series of depictions of Tahitian society and culture, as well as drawings from New Zealand and Australia.

Our collection of original maps, artworks and journals from the voyages, alongside rare printed books and newly commissioned videos, seek to shed new light on the encounters that completed the outline of the known world and formed the starting point for two centuries of globalisation.

This library is nearly 1000 years old!

The Hereford Cathedral Chained Library is an interesting one!

The practice of chaining books was the normal practice for reference libraries starting in the Middle Ages until the 18th century. The Chained Library has been around since the 1100′s.

This is the Duke of Humphrey’s Library at Oxford University in England. It’s the main research library of the University of Oxford and is one of the oldest libraries in Europe (established in 1602, making it 408 years old!)
