I've just placed on order on The King of Karelia. Col P.J. Woods and the British Intervention in North Russia 1918-1919. A History & Memoir

It is about the British expedition in the Murmansk area during the Russian Revolution and the Finnish Kindred Peoples' Wars. It will be interesting to get a British perspective on this conflict that for 99.99% of Britons must be an obscure and little known tale.

Well, I've finished the actual Karelian Diary (Part Two of the book) written by Colonel Woods and have now started looking at Nick Baron's (the author-historian) assessment of the events. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed by the inaccuracies and rather biased interpretations he has to offer. I suppose Baron's strength is in analyzing British ambitions. So I'm afraid the only part of the book with true value, at least from the point of view of Finnish history enthusiast such as myself, is the Karelian Diary itself.

Since I've been studying the topic of the Heimosodat, I think I'll stay the course and acquire this volume next:

Heimosotien historia 1918-1922 by Jussi Niinistö (current True Finn MP )

I came across a documentary called Äänisen vettä (Water of Onega), which is a historical and cultural look at the region, which has both Slavic and Finnic heritage.

Here is their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Äänise...723781?sk=wall

It has recently premiered in Petroskoi, it shouldn't be long before its available.

Since Livonians have been the hot topic in recent days:

Valkoisen hiekan kansa: liiviläisten historiaa ja kulttuuria Edgar Vaalgamaa

(People of the White Sand - History and Culture of the Livonians)

Edgar Vaalgamaa (b.1912 - d. December 20, 2003) was Livonian priest and ethnologist.

Vaalgamaa was born in Košrags in the northern coast of Courland. Like many other Livonians, his family got their living from fishing. Edgar Vaalgamaa however, didn't want to be a fisherman, but went to study theology to the university of Helsinki in 1934. He graduated in 1939, but was unable to return because of the World War II. Edgar stayed in Finland, and volunteered to Continuation War. After the war he worked as a priest in several different churches. At the same time he translated the Latvian epic poem Lāčplēsis to Finnish. Later he wrote the book Valkoisen hiekan kansa, which is one of the largest books about Livonian people history and culture. Edgar Vaalgamaa died in 2003, but the family of Vaalgamaas still lives in Finland.

I just remembered a movie with an undeniably Finnic theme:

Populäärimusiikkia Vittulanjänkältä / Populärmusik från Vittula / Popular music From Vittula

A movie about youth in the Finnish Torne river valley in the 60's, 70's.

It is based on a book by the same name written by Mikael Niemi, a Tornedalian author who has written about themes dealing with Tornedalian heritage. As usual, the book is better but the movie is alright, too.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Talvi and say I cannot find Mauno Jokipii anywhere on the major Estonian book sale pages...

In return, I have to ask: are there any translations to Finnish of the author Enn Haabsaar?
