I dont particularly care whether or not it's a traditional county.

It's where I'm from being that this is 2011. And I know perfectly well what City of London refers to.

The poll options seem to include only traditional counties. I'm merely pointing out that this is probably why it isn't included.

It's where I'm from being that this is 2011.
Nice. But now you know why it's not listed.

And I know perfectly well what City of London refers to.
Good, but many don't, and that was my point, given that the list is one of traditional counties and most don't come from the City of London (which is presumably what 'London' would refer to in a historical/traditional context).

Either way, we all know where you're from now, and that's what's important.

But are you in that bit of it that is in Middlesex, or the chunks that are in the bounds of Kent and so on?

    Devil take 'Greater London'.

And 'Greater Manchester', 'Merseyside', 'Humberside' and 'Tyne and Wear', for that matter!

1/4 of my ancestry is from south/eastern England, would have to check and see if anyone knows the actual location (though the only relatives interested in researching ancestry focus on the Irish side). Some Norman and some Anglo-Saxon, to what degree I do not know.

A fellow my (German) dad had dinner and hung out with for an evening one time apparently was from there, up until now I was unaware it was an actual place in England. Makes sense that the name origin was from a place there.

By ex-colonial I'm assuming you mean people residing in former English colonies as opposed to people from the former colonies who moved to England?

Anyways, I'm about half English ancestrally, a little over, my lineage is from Yorkshire as are some other families in my pedigree, but I've got significant ancestry from Hampshire and Suffolk via my great grandmother her paternal grandparents both immigrated from Walsham le Willows and her maternal grandparents both immigrated from Hampshire (Andover and Hurstbourne Priors), and some of me folks originated in Middlesex and Northumberland.

My paternal family center was in Addington, Buckinghamshire, but my line resided in London before migrating to Virginia.

    My paternal origin:
The Buckinghamshire Genealogical Society in discussing the village of Addington, says:
It is probable that the name was derived from Adda or Æddi an early Saxon owner, and means "The place of Adda's people", or "Æddi's farm". This may well be the same person whose name is used in the nearby parish of Adstock.
Their discussion of Adstock includes the following:
Adstock is a village in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom, about 3 miles north west of Winslow.

At the end of the 10th century, Adstock formed a portion of the Lands of Godwine, Earl of Kent, whose second wife Gyen was the sister of Suen, King of Denmark.

After the Norman Conquest, its name was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Edestoche which is Anglo Saxon and means Eadda's Farm. Nearby Addington was named after the same person.

In the mid to late 11th century the manor of Adstock was given by William the Conqueror to his illegitimate son William Peverell, who was listed as its owner in 1086. This suggests that the manor was of some value, or that its previous owner was of some prominence in Anglo Saxon society.
