Confusion, worry ahead of migrant camp closure in France

PARIS – Aid workers in the port town of Calais are expressing worry over a lack of information ahead of Monday's scheduled dismantling of France's slum-like migrant camp.

French authorities have said they plan to relocate the 6,486 people still staying at the camp to reception centers across the country or abroad as a "humanitarian" operation.

The camp's closure is expected to last a week.

French teacher Michel Abecassis said Saturday he's concerned many "don't know exactly where (the) reception centers are located" or "how many people there will be."

Benedictine monk Johannes Maertens says it also remains unclear what will happen to many minors who want to go to the United Kingdom if they are refused entry.

France plans to assign teenagers remaining in the country to special reception centers.

There have been various 'jungle camps' since 1999 in Calais for illegals trying to enter the UK. The Calais "Jungle" is the nickname given to a refugee and migrant encampment in the vicinity of Calais, France, where migrants and refugees live.

Many living in this camp attempt to illegally enter the United Kingdom via the Port of Calais or the Eurotunnel by stowing away on lorries, ferries, cars, or trains traveling to the UK.

French police last night admitted there was a ‘high risk’ of violent opposition from UK-based anti-capitalist group No Borders against the move to clear the Jungle.

In a statement, they said an exclusion zone had been created in the camp because of fears ‘hard-Left activists’ were planning attacks. They referred to an incident in March when the south side of the Jungle was cleared and 100 protesters descended on the camp, adding: ‘Considering activists from hard-Left group No Borders have arrived in the Calais area and have set up home in squats, there is a high risk the activists have penetrated the camp with a view to influencing the migrants as they did in March.’

French police were investigating claims on Wednesday that British anarchists are starting fires in the Calais "Jungle" camp. A massive blaze overnight destroyed makeshift shops and caused gas canisters to explode.

Stones were hurled at fire crews. One blaze took hold near one of the entrances to the squalid shantytown, which is being demolished by the French authorities.
