Default Castles of the United Kingdom

    Information from Wikipedia

    Arundel Castle - West Sussex

Arundel Castle is a restored and remodeled medieval castle in Arundel, West Sussex, England. It was established by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067. Roger became the first to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War and then restored in the 18th and 19th centuries.

    Bamburgh Castle - Northumberland

Built on a dolerite outcrop, the location was previously home to a fort of the native Britons known as Din Guarie and may have been the capital of the British kingdom of the region . . . The Normans built a new castle on the site, which forms the core of the present one. William II unsuccessfully besieged it in 1095 during a revolt supported by its owner, Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumbria. After Robert was captured, his wife continued the defence until coerced to surrender by the king's threat to blind her husband.

Late medieval British author Thomas Malory identified Bamburgh Castle with Joyous Gard, the mythical castle home of Sir Launcelot in Arthurian legend.

    Bodiam Castle - East Sussex

Built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a former knight of Edward III, with the permission of Richard II, ostensibly to defend the area against French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. Of quadrangular plan, Bodiam Castle has no keep, having its various chambers built around the outer defensive walls and inner courts.

    Beaumaris Castle - Wales

Located on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, it was built as part of Edward I's campaign to conquer the north of Wales after 1282 . . . Beaumaris Castle was taken by Welsh forces in 1403 during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr, but was recaptured by royal forces in 1405. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies.

UNESCO considers Beaumaris to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage site.

Amazing Castles, they look very strong and proud.
The first, with the tree, look like a magical and old fortress.

York Castle (Clifford's Tower) - Yorkshire

The first motte and bailey castle on the site was built in 1068 following the Norman conquest of York. After the destruction of the castle by rebels and a Viking army in 1069, York Castle was rebuilt and reinforced with extensive water defences, including a moat and an artificial lake.

In 1190, 150 local Jews were killed in a pogrom in the castle keep, most of them committed suicide in order not to fall to the hands of the mob. Henry III rebuilt the castle in stone in the middle of the 13th century.

After a major explosion in 1684 rendered the remaining military defences uninhabitable, York Castle continued to be used as a jail and prison until 1929.

    Corfe Castle - Dorset

Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century.

During the English Civil War, Lady Mary Bankes led the defence of the castle when it was twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. The first siege, in 1643, was unsuccessful, but by 1645 Corfe was one of the last remaining royalist strongholds in southern England and fell to a siege ending in an assault. In March that year Corfe Castle was demolished on Parliament's orders.

    Caernarfon Castle - Wales

There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale.

The town and castle were sacked in 1294 when Madog ap Llywelyn led a rebellion against the English. Caernarfon was recaptured the following year.

Despite its dilapidated condition, during the English Civil War Caernarfon Castle was held by Royalists, and was besieged three times by Parliamentarian forces.

I remember being taken on my first ever school trip to visit the 14th century Bodiam Castle when I was five. How I love that castle!

My CoE school class loved exploring the dungeons, the moat, the drawbridge, the portcullis, slitted windows for bows and arrows, etc, at Bodiam.

We were also lucky enough to be taken on a school-trip to visit Pevensey Castle too.

I find that British castles tend not to be as ornamental to look at as French castles, because British castles were built for the purposes of being functional defences during battles, rather than just being built for decoration.

There's a lot of very interesting history, legends, and eventful battles behind British castles.

I read that there's more castles in Wales than any nation in the world.

This (below) is the remains of Corfe Castle in Dorset. It was a Roman Castle.

Maiden Castle in Dorset is actually the largest hill fortress in Europe that was built by Celtic people in defence against the Romans.

Durham University College Castle is a university college inside a World Heritage Site castle.

Wedding receptions, banquets, and other special events are held in the castle too.

Durham Castle is a Norman castle in the city of Durham, England, which has been wholly occupied since 1840 by University College, Durham. It is open to the general public to visit, but only through guided tours, since it is in use as a working building and is home to over 100 students. The castle stands on top of a hill above the River Wear on Durham's peninsula,

The castle was originally built in the 11th century as a projection of the Norman king's power in the north of England, as the population of England in the north remained "wild and fickle" following the disruption of the Norman Conquest in 1066. It is an example of the early motte and bailey castles favoured by the Normans. The holder of the office of the Bishop of Durham was appointed by the King to exercise royal authority on his behalf, with the castle being his seat.
