What a beauty in all pictures.

The stunning scenery and mountain backdrops often gives a magical aura and atmosphere to Scottish castles. Something that I love. I also love seeing their castles being beautifully reflected like a mirror in crystal-clear lakes.

Dunrobin and Balmoral are grand stately homes with baronial architecture than proper Castles. But none the less, pretty and nice. I'd argue we have more castles/towers than Wales does by population. But England & Wales have awesome & solid castles! Big big moats and everything.

    Caernafon Castle, Wales

Caernarfon Castle (Welsh: Castell Caernarfon), often anglicised as Carnarvon Castle, is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.

    Harlech Castle, Wales

Harlech Castle (Welsh: Castell Harlech), located in Harlech, Gwynedd, Wales, is a medieval fortification, constructed atop a spur of rock close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289 at the substantial cost of Ł8,190. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars, withstanding the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn between 1294–95, but falling to Owain Glyndŵr in 1404. It then became Glyndŵr's residence and military headquarters for the remainder of the uprising until being recaptured by English forces in 1409. During the 15th century Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by the Lancastrians for seven years, before Yorkist troops forced its surrender in 1468, a siege memorialised in the song Men of Harlech. Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1647 when it became the last fortification to surrender to the Parliamentary armies. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, as a tourist attraction.

UNESCO considers Harlech to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage site. The fortification is built of local stone and concentric in design, featuring a massive gatehouse that probably once provided high-status accommodation for the castle constable and visiting dignitaries.

The sea originally came much closer to Harlech than in modern times, and a water-gate and a long flight of steps leads down from the castle to the former shore, which allowed the castle to be resupplied by sea during sieges. In keeping with Edward's other castles in North Wales, the architecture of Harlech has close to links to that found in the County of Savoy during the same period, an influence probably derived from the Savoy origins of the main architect, James of Saint George.

Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a tourist attraction.

    Castell Dinas Brân

The ruinous state of Dinas Brân – Crow’s Fortress Castle – high above the town of Llangollen, almost puts it out of contention as a castle. It is really just a short stretch of crumbling thirteenth-century masonry and a few vaulted arches, but there are few better places in Wales to watch the sun set over the bucolic Dee Valley and ponder the English–Welsh power struggles that gave rise to this borderlands relic.

    Penrhyn Castle, Wales

More like a Welsh château than a real castle, Penrhyn stands as a testament to nineteenth-century class divisions. While the workers hacked away at the nearby slate quarries, their masters created a vulgar but compelling neo-Norman fancy complete with five-storey keep. Everything is on a massive scale, from the 3ft-thick oak doors and halls of fine art – Canaletto, Gainsborough, Rembrandt – to a slate bed, designed for Queen Victoria’s visit.

    Conwy Castle, Wales

Conwy Castle (Welsh: Castell Conwy, English: Conway Castle) is a medieval fortification in Conwy, on the north coast of Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1289. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around Ł15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294–95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.

UNESCO considers Conwy to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage site. The rectangular castle is built from local and imported stone and occupies a coastal ridge, originally overlooking an important crossing point over the River Conwy.

Divided into an Inner and an Outer Ward, it is defended by eight large towers and two barbicans, with a postern gate leading down to the river, allowing the castle to be resupplied from the sea. It retains the earliest surviving stone machicolations in Britain and what historian Jeremy Ashbee has described as the "best preserved suite of medieval private royal chambers in England and Wales". In keeping with other Edwardian castles in North Wales, the architecture of Conwy has close links to that found in the kingdom of Savoy during the same period, an influence probably derived from the Savoy origins of the main architect, James of Saint George.

The castles of Gwynedd and Conwy and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct help put thousands of pounds on average house prices for those living near the historic locations.

On the 70th anniversary of UNESCO – the body which awards World Heritage Status – research from property website Zoopla has revealed that homes located near to a World Heritage Site are worth 27% more than the average UK property.

In North Wales the difference can be up to Ł71,000.

Beaumaris , Conwy , Caernarfon and Harlech castles, along with the fortifications surrounding the towns of Conwy and Caernarfon were collectively declared a World Heritage Site in 1986.

'There's over 600 castles in Wales. That's more castles per square mile than any other country in the world. And they've looked after the remains of their past. All over Wales you can visit ancient castles where famous battles were fought with the Celts, the Romans, the Saxons and the Vikings.' Here's a taster:

    Dover Castle - Kent

Founded in the 11th century, it has been described as the "Key to England" due to its defensive significance throughout history. It is the largest castle in England. It was during the reign of Henry II that the castle began to take recognisable shape. The inner and outer baileys and the great keep belong to this time.

In 1216, a group of rebel barons invited the future Louis VIII of France to come and take the English crown. He had some success breaching the walls, but was unable ultimately to take the castle. During the English Civil War it was held for the King but then taken by a Parliamentarian trick without a shot being fired in 1642 (hence it avoided being ravaged and survives far better than most castles).

At the height of the Napoleonic Wars, a complex of barracks tunnels about 15 metres below the cliff top housed more than 2,000 men and to date are the only underground barracks ever built in Britain. The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 saw the tunnels converted first into an air-raid shelter and then later into a military command centre and underground hospital. In May 1940, Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsey directed the evacuation of French and British soldiers from Dunkirk, code-named Operation Dynamo, from his headquarters in the cliff tunnels.
