Our basement did not have any windows, so it was not possible, sadly.

TBH, I dont understand the rush to get out of the family thing, it's a bit strange and foreign to me. Younglings get to leave the house when they are ready. Sometimes parents help them out but that's about it, at least for people I know around me.

I moved out at ~21ish, but I have no problematic relationship with my mother and sharing an apartment with her is fine. Respecting one's privacy is pretty simple.

We keep in touch and see each other 1-2 times per week, not these days of course, but in general.

Also, I could move to her place if she needs it.

For already more than 10 years I have been living separately from my parents (more than 1000km). Even my parents live separately from each other, maintaining a good relationship (mom - in the apartment, father - in the private sector).
We communicate on the Internet 2-3 times a week, and a couple of times a year I come to visit them.
I do not speak for everyone, but living with my parents has become impractical for me after 21 years - no one needs a daily scandal.
