Here is entry about Bulgarian Torbalan, the man with the sack.He exists in many different cultures as well.

The Sack Man (also called the Bag Man or Man with the Bag/Sack) is a figure similar to the bogeyman, portrayed as a man with a sack on his back who carries naughty children away.

In Bulgaria, children are sometimes told that a scary old man called Torbalan (Bulgarian: "Торбалан", which comes from "торба", meaning a sack, so his name means "Man with a sack") will come and kidnap them with his large sack if they misbehave.

Well, really interesting thread, but one has to mention the most FAMOUS creatures of all when it comes about Balkan - VAMPIRES.

Mythology about Vampires IS NOT from Romania, but in fact from Serbia. First who ever reported this stories about vampires to western ppl, were Austrians durin Austro-Hungary, their officers and diplomats who would often visit Serbia heard about that strange stories, so they reported them back in Vienna, trough Vienna they spreaded trough rest of Europe and came to Irish writer Bram Stoker, who used VAMPIRES and the mythology from Serbia for most famous vampire novel (and one of the most famous novels ever); Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Bram Stoker used entire mythology about Vampires for Dracula but he took Dracula for main role in Novel, a Dracula, Duke/Count of Wallachia, which Stoker placed in Transylvania, and made a vampire out of him, in combination with true story about Dracula fighting Turks etc...

Slowly but surely VAMPIRES became one of the most famous Horror EVENTS of modern era for movies, books, etc...IN ENTIRE WORLD.

And Bram Stoker's Dracula became instantly the bestseller novel in 19th and 20th century.

what does vampire mean in serbian? I'm just curious... because in albanian it means to drink with teeth, or it can translate to cause numbness with teeth...
vampire is most likely a turkish word from Uber which means witch.

Also, the reason why garlic is "anathema" to vampires is because people used to believe that strong smelling stuff like garlic was apotropaic, meaning able to ward off evil spirits.
