I can't help but feel that Italy is kind of decadent nowadays. Kenshiro will probably know it better than I, but it's probably the country most harmed by the 2008 crisis.
On a slighly related footnote, Serie A was just crazy from the late 80's to the early 2000's. Milan, Juve, Inter, Parma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, Roma, Lazio, Napoli, these teams would be beasts in the European competitions and buy the absolute best players.
Nowadays, Juventus are caught cheating as routine, Parma, Fiorentina and Napoli had to refound, Sampdoria, Roma and Lazio are dwarfs in Europe and the Milanese teams changed owners and don't have nearly as much significance as fifteen years ago. No Italian team wins an UCL since 2010 and the closest one yet was a really lucky Roma. And all of that while playing in empty ancient state-owned stadiums with useless athletic tracks.
