Okay nitpickers, let's see shall we. Richard I ruled England, Wales and Ireland, and was feudal overlord of Scotland.

And no King of Great Britain was he. Nor was he, Coeur de Lion, even English.

It doesn't matter though, because what became "British" identity was, in fact, English identity. I see no distinction between the two.

You're right that Richard I wasn't English, of course.

    - Richard was not English.
    - He did not rule the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Ergo, Cyprus was not under British rule in any sense.

Not really. It's more Scottish with elements of superficial Englishness.

But anyway, we have come to the agreement that Cyprus was not under British, English or other British Isles national control, but under Norman rule.

British identity is more Scottish than English? Lol.

Richard I was Angevin, not Norman.

I'm not too sure I would agree with that. It is in no way dominated by either Scottish or English elements. Britishness is pretty much an even mixture of Scottishness and Englishness.

I wouldn't even say it was under English rule. Didn't the Lionheart have a rather condescending view of the English people ?
