Marco Casagrande is a well-known and succesful Finnish-Italian architect and professor of architecture. His Italian father owns a chain of car dealerships around Finland, and he wanted Marco to follow him into the business and become a car salesman.
Instead, he enlisted as a volunteer for the HVO, and later wrote a very memorable book about his experinces in the Balkan war. He then went on to become, as already mentioned, a succesful architect.
It's a bit crass to say that fighting in a war is better than sex, but I bet it is highly liberating (assuming you don't, you know, die 'n' shit) and puts things in perspective.
