Marco Casagrande is a well-known and succesful Finnish-Italian architect and professor of architecture. His Italian father owns a chain of car dealerships around Finland, and he wanted Marco to follow him into the business and become a car salesman.

Instead, he enlisted as a volunteer for the HVO, and later wrote a very memorable book about his experinces in the Balkan war. He then went on to become, as already mentioned, a succesful architect.

It's a bit crass to say that fighting in a war is better than sex, but I bet it is highly liberating (assuming you don't, you know, die 'n' shit) and puts things in perspective.

I agree with the liberation you talk. Unfortunatelly marching to a war requires a degree of optimist on your own destiny that I'd lacked from my earlier infance. Probably i would be from the very start imagining my future life as a severely mutilated person and how and if i would carry on with that or not. In fact, I'm recently arrived from a 1000km car route among Spanish drivers feeling my good luck reservoir almost empty. Curiously many of the worst I had the chance of checking out were women, as if experience and confidence on their driving skills were even counterproductive.

I have on occasion known the odd ultra-violent male, in fact, one used to be a poster at TNP and from what he explained to me there is a very large dosage of truth to the "war is better than sex" comment.

Whilst understandably the "war is better than sex" ideology does not necessarily apply to metrosexuals and mummy's boys, it does very much apply, imo, to males who take pleasure and pride in the exercise of extreme violence. In fact, some of them basically "get off" on it.

Somebody once told me how the experience of beating an opponent to a pulp (think he worked him over with a steel pipe, cannot remember the exact details) gave him one of the most intense, if not the most intense erections and gratification.

So yes.... what those Norwegian soldiers are describing isn't imo so unusual nor is it abnormal.

What is abnormal is how the Norwegian General (typical desk jockey officer who obviously doesn't get his own hands dirty) and the Norwegian PC Brigade are attempting to portray this typical combatant behaviour and opinions as being "abnormal" and "being from the dark age".

I mean for f*** sake, the military business = the killing business. It's not holiday camp.

I think it's unprofessional conduct on their side, talking like this in public.

I think it also depends on which side you fight, I mean - modern armies have an whole organisation behind their soldiers - they have airsupport, artillerysupport and a significant advantage in equipment, compared with their enemy (Taliban or whatever). Yeah sure the modern soldier is in danger during battle, but not in the same amount as their enemy. If you are in a real life battle situation - and you are fearing for your life and your chances of surviving are small - you would not talk like this about the battle, nor your enemy.

In WWII, Allied and German soldiers had a huge amount of respect for each other, yeah sure they hated each other and killed each other. But both sides experienced losses in the same horrible situations in which they had to operate. They felt connected ....

Real soldiers no not talk like this, the(se) Norwegian soldier(s) are dishonorable!

I actually read a near enough identical comment in some bit of WWI memoirs. It was in some literary review magazine I read in my teens, about the very sexual buzz soldiers got out of the more 'hands on' fighting down there in No Man's Land in Flanders. The article was trying to pass this off as 'sensational' but it seemed pretty much to 'stand to reason' to me at the time.


I only wish I could remember the quotation from the diary in question...
"Slaughtered a good number of Gerries today. Big jobbies all round!" (referring to erections) is what my memory provides me with, though I can't vouch for the accuracy.

Maybe they should bribe the Taliban not to attack their forces instead like the Italians did.



It's not like the Taliban are any enemy worth respecting.
