Default Wine drinking consumption per capita - top nations chart

The World's Biggest Wine Drinkers per capita, the results might be surprising.

Some Americans may like to enjoy a nice glass of wine after a long working day, with annual consumption per person in the United States standing at 10.25 liters. Consumption rates are far higher elsewhere, however, especially in Europe. Research from the Wine Institute has revealed that 14 of the globe’s top 15 nations for wine consumption are in Europe, along with Uruguay.

Vatican City is at the very top of the wine-drinking league with an average resident consuming an impressive 54.26 liters a year. Although it may seem surprising that the Holy See grabs top spot, it does have a uniform and unusual demographic. Its residents are older and tend to eat together in large groups while the consumption of Communion wine is standard practice for a large proportion of them. Andorra, another small European nation, is in second place with 46.26 liters consumed per capita. France places fifth, with residents drinking 42.5 liters of wine each year.

Some non-producers like Sweden are among the top consumers, that is a surprise for me.

Any regular wine drinkers among the members ?

    I do not like wine

Contrary to what it may seem, in Spain (the largest wine producer), we drink very little wine, most young people drink water or refreshment to eat, and beer in bars.

I love wine. Most Portugueses do anyway. We are lucky to live in a country that produces top wine just like Spain, Italy and France. The only difference is that ours cost way less. My family also happens to produce red wine, like most portuguese families. I do not drink it on daily basis though, which is common in here to have one or two glasses of wine every main meal. The reason why we are probaly on top consumers.

Even young people here love to drink wine. Some wines are really cheap.

Young people do not know how to appreciate wine. They just buy what we call vinho carrascăo like Galitos for the purpose of getting drunk. Horrible hangover. Also Sangria from Pingo Doce. Wine is meant to be enjoyed.
