I can't help but be suspicious of those flaunting their happiness, joy and ecstasy to anybody unfortunate enough to be in range of the publicity scattergun over and over and over.

It = trying too hard. Normal people just get on with things, happy, average or unhappy.

this is my thoughts. I knew a friend who convinced himself about something, I can't remember what it was, but he use to go round saying he was x, and eventually believed/thought he was x.
