The big thing is that people think that the Portuguese gained a lot from the colonies. It was just the ELITES that benefited from the colonies (exploitation of raw materials, trade, etc.). The majority of the people didn't benefit from the colonies. They were just tools for the elites to use in order to increase their power.
Even recently Luanda and Maputo were at the same level of development as Lisboa during the Estado Novo. The rest of Portugal was underdeveloped. Colonies became a drain of our economic resources and human capital.
