Before 1918 Romanians were denied full rights in Transylvania for calling themselves Vlach/Romanian and not speaking Hungarian.

Americans being annoyed that Spanish is overtaking English in their country is natural and understandable and if they become a minority they'll be discriminated against for speaking English in a Spanish-majority land. There is no equal rights, the majority will always try to impose itself over a minority and there's no reason for the US to accept Spanish as a language.
Romanians are pissed off because many Hungarians don't even bother with the Romanian language. A lot of them don't speak Romanian or flat out refuse to.

Americans may not exactly be renowned for their language skills, but saying there are no bilingual Americans (whether with Spanish or anything else) is a gross exaggeration.

Anyway, on topic, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland and Belgium are OK despite having several official languages. The issue is illegal immigration, not bilingualism per se.
