English is an outlier among Germanic languages for its substantially larger Latin and Greek influence. However, I don't really see the English people as outliers compared to other Germanics. They're more northern than southern Germans and Austrians. Behaviorally, they are NOT overly loquacious or gregarious. Their mentality is just about as Germanic as possible. Sure, they have Celtic influences, but so do the Germans and Icelanders, for example.

English culture and society has always been influenced by our Celtic neighbours (who we must also consider amongst our antecedents, of course, in the form of the Romano-Britons that contributed at least half of our genetic make-up). This was the case from the days of the first Angles, Saxons, Jutes, etc landing on the South-East coast of Britain.

I'd say that the British Isles in general are their own thing, apart from continental groupings.

No nation known has built a greater empire than that built by the English. The English is the most successful of all Germanic languages.
