First of all, lets make one thing clear: Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe and has the same defined borders since 1139, almost 900 years ago. It is way older than modern unified Spain. We have a different language and different culture. With that said, it is also true that there is no other nation more similar to Portugal than Spain and Spain to Portugal. We all originate from the old Kingdom of Astúrias. When it comes to ethnicities there ain't that many differences in my opinion, it must be like Irish and the British, Croatians and Serbians, etc.

Why would he consider himself spaniard? He was from a different country.

Portuguese and Spaniards living in the same peninsula, it's natural that they share many things in common, but no, Portuguese don't are just Spaniards...

Maybe genetically they're the same, but they definitely have their own unique cultural identities.

If Spain had ever something to do with Portugal (and the opposite too), that was lost long time ago.

"Languages are similar"?. Bah, as similiar as the Italian and any other Romance language.

They both have in common just their borders.

It's something remarkable how Portugal can be absolutely indifferent for Spaniards.

This conclusion are results of nationalism of XIX century. But the story of Peninsula is not just an century.
For example i have read an quote from Luís Vaz de Camões:

Falai de castelhanos e portugueses, porque espanhóis somos todos

Speak about Castillians and Portugueses, because we are all Spaniards. (Luis Vaz de Camoes, 1524 - 1580)

Portuguese and Spanish (Castillian Spanish) language are more similar to each other than any other Romance language. Only because the average Spaniard can't understand anything of what we say doesn't mean it is not similar. We have much more things in common than just the borders, can you name me other nation more similar to yours than ours?

He was using "espanhóis" as a synonym to "iberians". The word Espanha comes from Hispania, which was how the romans called this land.
He certainly wasn't talking about spaniards in the modern sense.
