WTF ?!? I'm probably the most philhellenic Frenchman of the Apricity , the only one who learned to speak δημοτική (I speak it bad but at least enough to make myself understood during my stay in Greece).

Western classrooms owe you everything: mathematic lessons (Euclid, Pythagoras, Archimedes,Thales and Eratosthenes), philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus and Epicurus), history (Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon), tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides), sports (marathon, decathlon...), blockbusters (the Iliad and the Odyssey, but please, next time NO BRAD PITT IN LEATHER SKIRT FOR ZEUS SAKE !!!)

Do French people in general feel close to Walloons and Swiss French?

Yes, for obvious reasons (we share the same language), and IMO we've always felt closer to Walloons than to Romand Swiss.

Can't exactly explain why, perhaps because we both are funding members of the EU, unlike Switzerland which has always refused to join the club; the Ardennes wooded hills separating Belgium and France aren't a big obstacle compared to the higher Alps and Jura mountains. During the two World Wars, France and Belgium suffered the same fate, unlike Switzerland which always remained neutral.

That's maybe why the Belgians are our brothers and the Swiss, only close cousins.

Maybe Southern/Eastern French feel closer to the Swiss French?

Generally spoken, I think it's Belgium. But people living in Savoy or near the Swiss-borderzone may naturally prefer Switzerland.

In fact, we should make a poll: reserved for French TA-members only.

That would be cool. So you think someone in Provence naturally feels closer to Walloons than Swiss French, even though Swiss French partially has the Franco-Provencal dialect? Interesting nonetheless.

I don't know star trek enought, but I'am suspicious american picture a hero as french.
For example, although French is almost
a dead language, he still knows him and
supports french culture, has also some
    house somewhere in Burgundy.

Mmmmh. I forgot to mention one reason why Belgians are usually prefered by the French, perhaps the most important of all.

Belgians are more similar to the French, enjoy long feasts full of tasty food and beer, talk loud and are noisy, unorganized, love jokes...

Whereas the Swiss are too neat and tidy, obsessed with cleanliness, precision, well-done work...In other words, they're too German for our French taste.

I know this sounds too cliché, but there is always a part of truth in every stereotype.
Let's take a look at Asterix

This is a picture from Asterix in Helvetia

and this one is from Asterix in Belgium:

See the differences between Swiss and Belgians?

is from Franche-Comté near Switzerland (that explains why he is so strict), to be more precise, it's a region recently linked to Burgundy, not Picardy)
