The U.S. State Department lists Armenia among the safest places to visit, ranked at level 1. On the other hand, Turkey is considered very unsafe, at level 3 (with an advisory to reconsider travel), and Azerbaijan has been ranked at level 2. As with Turkey, the State Department considers Azerbaijan to be unsafe to travel in. This article, from the Armenian Weekly, was published on January 12th.

Armenia among Safest Countries for American Travel in New State Department Ranking
Published by Armenian Weekly News on January 12, 2018

Armenia is among the safest countries for Americans to travel to, according to a new rating system announced by the United States Department of State.

The revamped U.S. State Department system, which was unveiled Wednesday, ranks countries by threat level based on several factors, including the risk of crime, civil unrest, terrorism, and natural disaster. The tiers are the following: Level 1, Exercise normal precautions. Level 2, Exercise increased caution. Level 3, Reconsider travel. Level 4, Do not travel.

Armenia has been included in Level 1, the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk, though the travel advisory lists Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) as a region to avoid “due to armed conflict.”

Neighboring Georgia has also been ranked in the Level 1 category, whereas Azerbaijan has a Level 2 ranking. The State Department also urged Americans to reconsider travel to Russia (Level 3) “due to terrorism and harassment” and Turkey (Level 3) “due to terrorism and arbitrary detentions.”

I've always been curious about Armenia as well. It's one of those small countries that has an outsized footprint because of its diaspora, like Lebanon.

Armenia is a small country indeed but for example the Embassy of the United States of America to Armenia for a long time was the largest US Embassy in the world, now it's the largest American embassy in Europe and second in the world after the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. By the way China now is constructing its new embassy in Armenia which will be near the US embassy and it will be the second largest embassy in Armenia after the US Embassy.

That makes sense since Armenia is a crucial player on the new silk road.

While both Georgia and Armenia are given high marks as safe countries, both Azerbaijan and Turkey are considered to be unsafe by the US State Department. My source for it is below the link that was published in January of this year.

Gentlemen I have a question: have any of you taken a DNA test before? If so, have you posted your results?

I've been seriously considering a trip to Armenia and Georgia (especially the wine regions, yum), but a lot of the places I am interested in seem hard to get to unless you pay for an organised tour. Is there a lot of tourist-friendly infrastructure there? Is it easy to train/bus between the two countries?
