Default Sardinian Facts : The Ten Things That You Must Not Do In Sardinia

THE TEN THINGS WE SUGGEST THAT YOU NEVER DO IN SARDINIA

We’ve said it a thousand times : Sardinia is like an Universe on its own. Marvelous, extended in the middle of Mediterranean sea, inhabited by people that can give everything without asking nothing in exchange, but that can be very proud and also take offense if they feel lack of respect towards them. For this reason we have decided to publish a short vademecum, clearly very ironical, for use and consumption of “Continentals” about the 10 things that you must not do in Sardinia.

1- DON’T START OR END EVERY PHRASE WITH AJÓ*

*Ajó = Let’s go - it’s often the only word of Sardinian language known by Italian tourists, they often continue to repeat it even if they don’t know what it means

This first rule is very important. Put on your head that YOU CAN’T SPEAK SARDINIAN and saying “ajó” doesn’t mean that you can speak Sardinian. We assure you that saying it continuously doesn’t make you more likeable to our eyes, on the contrary this makes you appear like total idiots. Therefore if you can’t do without it, say it to oneself, but don’t say it aloud to a Sardinian. Ok?

2- NEVER REFUSE A DRINK IN SARDINIA

This rule applies above all in the area Nuorese and in Barbagia. If you are offered a drink YOU MUST NEVER AND NEVER say no, it would be an offense. Therefore drink, and if they continue to offer drinks, continue to drink. A Mirto*, “unu Filu ‘e Ferru**?” a good wine? The important thing is to continue to drink. So we are all more happy and become friends more quickly.

*Mirto : strong super alcoholic liquor made with fruits or leaves of myrtle
** Filu ‘e Ferru : strong super alcoholic spirit known also as “Abba Ardente” (Burning Water)

3- NEVER SAY THAT SARDINIA IS MARVELOUS AND THAT YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY MANY SARDINIANS GO AWAY

You could really receive an endless stream of insults for such a phrase. Ok, you often come from grey and cold cities, you really like Sardinia, but we assure you that this isn’t really the best way to make Sardinians understand it. Above all, don’t offend your (and ours) intelligence with such a phrase. Understood?

    4- DON’T ACT LIKE A KNOW-IT-ALL WITH SARDINIANS

An advice? Don’t act like a know-it-all with Sardinians. We are an educated people, we read a lot (it could be because we live on an island and we like to evade?), we also do much. Therefore don’t think to speak acting like “teachers”, because Sardinians - even those that at first sight look like “ignorant goats” – could answer you with a retort and shut you up instantly.

5- NEVER SAY THAT ICHNUSA IS NOT A GOOD BEER

If you value your skin, don't dare to say that Icnusa is not one of the best beers you have ever drunk. To touch the Ichnusa to a Sardinian is like offending his parents. Therefore even if you find it dull, light or barely acceptable. God save you if you say it aloud. You could incur in the menacing wrath of Sardinians, young and elders all united to defend the most loved Quattro Mori......although it belongs to a foreign company and just the name is Sardinian, this is another matter.

6- NEVER SAY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE A LITTLE “SPUNTINO” (LUNCHEON)

If for you that come from the sea the "spuntino" (luncheon) means to eat something light (or at most a sandwich), be aware that in Sardinia it doesn't mean that. The "spuntino" in our island could become a super-lunch worthy of the best Wedding lunches. Never say to a Sardinian that you would like a "spuntino", you could spend the following two hours (at least) eating like there was no tomorrow.

7- DON’T TRY TO PASS THROUGH A FLOCK OF SHEEPS

If you are in a car and a flock of sheeps crosses the road, we suggest you do not try to pass through them at a walking pace, even if the sheeps seem to be endless. Sheperds usually don't like this behavior and could reproach you with our nice home-grown insults (among which the lightest would be "su cunnu 'e mamma tua" in southern Sardinian : "the cunt of your mother")

8- NEVER CHALLENGE A SARDINIAN TO DO SOMETHING (YOU COULD BE SURPRISED)

We Sardinians are certainly a proud people. Challenging a genuine Sardinian to do something - often also dangerous - is an automatically-accepted challenge. We are like this, a stubborn people (also envying sometimes), that badly tolerates that someone says that they are unable to do something. The consequences of these challenges could be also comical (or tragicomical)......

9- DON’T TAKE TOO SERIOUSLY WHAT A SARDINIAN TELLS YOU

This is obviously an ironic article. Irony in Sardinia is into the DNA of its inhabitants. When a Sardinian tells you something, even if he appears serious (sometimes almost hostile) often he's just mocking you ironically. Therefore, don't take him too seriously, maybe you can retort - this is respected by a genuine Sardinian!! - but please, don't be offended! A smile and a good drink will resolve everything.

10- DON’T BECOME TOO ATTACHED TO SARDINIA AND SARDINIANS

This is the most important advice. We say this for you, believe it. Don't become too attached to Sardinia, don't grow fond of Sardinians, don't let your heart in our beaches or in our sea. It could become an incurable illness. Because when Sardinia and its inhabitants enter in you, they don't let you go anymore. And you can't do nothing, it's too late... you can't do without this island.

SAS DEGHE COSAS QUI BOS CONSIZAMUS DE NO FAGHERE MAI IN SARDIGNA

1- NO COMINTZÉDAS O FINÉDAS OGNI FRASE CUN AJÓ*

    * Ajó = Andamus - Boltas medas est s’unica paràula in limba Sarda connotta dae sos turistas Italianos, e boltas medas sìghin a la repítere si puru no ìschin ite quéret nàrrere.

Custa prima regula est importante meda. Ponìde-bos in conca qui no NO ISCHÍDES FAEDDARE SU SARDU e qui nàrrere “ajò” no quéret nàrrere ischire faeddare su Sardu. Bos asseguramus qui néndelu tot’hora no bos fàghet pàrrere piùs simpaticos a ojos nostros, ànzis medas boltas nos parídes mancantes de a beru. Tando, si propriu no ‘nde podídes fàghere a mancu, narade-bò-lu intre a bòis, ma no l’abboghinédas ad unu Sardu. Cumpresu?

2- MAI REFIUTARE A BUFFARE IN SARDIGNA

Custa regula bàlet primariamente in sa Montagna. Unu Fil’e Ferru, unu bonu binu? S’importante est de sighire a buffare. Gai semus totus piùs allegros e diventamus amigos piùs in presse.

3- NO NARÉDAS MAI QUI SA SARDIGNA EST MARAVIGLIOSA E QUI NO CUMPRENDÍDES PRO ITE MEDAS SARDOS SI CHE SUN ANDENDE A FORA

4- NO FETTÉDAS SOS ISCHÍDOS CUN SOS SARDOS

Unu consizu? No fettédas mai sos ischídos cun sos Sardos.

Tando, si puru l’agattàdes issaboriada, lèbia o appena atzettabile, Deus bos bàrdiet dae lu nàrrere a boghe alta.

Si pro a bòis qui benídes dae su mare s’ispuntinu est pònere in matta calchi cosa de lèbiu (massimu unu paninu), tando, ischédas qui in Sardigna no quéret nàrrere gai. S’ispuntinu in s’isula nostra si dìat pòdere mudare ind’unu super-pranzu qui nudda hat ite imbidiare a sos mèzus Affidos. No narédas mai ad unu Sardu qui querídes fàghere un’ispuntinu, o dièdas pòder passare sas prossimas duas horas (nessi) mandighende comente qui no b’esséret unu cras.

7- NO CHIRCHÉDAS DE CHE JAMPARE UNU MASONE DE BERBÉGHES

Si bos càpitat de essere in macchina e unu masone de berbéghes bos attraéssat s’istrada, bos consizamus de no proare nemancu lontanamente a bi colare in mesu a passu lenu, si puru pàret qui sas berbéghes no fìnan piùs. A sos pastores de solitu no lis aggràdat custu cumportamentu e bos dìan pòdere apostrofare cun calchi simpaticu frastímu de sos nostros. (intre sos cales su piùs lèbiu dìat pòder essere “Su cunnu ‘e mamma tua” in Campidanesu)

8- NO ISFIDÉDAS MAI UNU SARDU A FAGHERE CALCHI COSA (‘NDE DIÉDAS PÒDERE ISTARE SURPRESOS)

S'ironia in Sardigna est in su DNA de sos habitantes suos. Daquí unu Sardu bos nàrat calchi cosa, si puru pàret seriu (e a boltas quasi hostile) boltas medas bos est leénde in giru ironicamente. Tando, no lu leédas troppu de a beru, magari respondídeli a manera – custu ad unu Sardu beru l’aggràdat!! – ma pro piaghère, no bos offendédas!

10- NO BOS LIGHÉDAS TROPPU A SA SARDIGNA E A SOS SARDOS

Custu est su consizu piùs importante. Lu naràmus pro a bòis, creìdebi. No bos lighédas a sa Sardigna, no bos affizionédas a sos Sardos, no lassédas su coro bostru in sas ispiaggias nostras o in su mare nostru. Ca daquí sa Sardigna e sos habitantes suos ti ch’intran a intro, dapòi no ti che làssan andare piùs. E no bi podídes fàghere piùs nudda, est ià troppu tardu…. No hàzis a pòdere piùs fàghere a mancu de cust’isula.

Ok?

Unu fil’e ferru? Un buon vinello? L’importante è continuare a bere.

So Mens Sarda illuminate me: What is Sardinian Vindicta?
Until the 80s there were many blood feuds in various villages of central and northern Sardinia, if someone was killed, the closer relative had the duty to avenge his death killing the assassin, it was a matter of honour, entire families were wiped out in these endless revenges, because the assassin's relatives avenged him and so on. Usually these vendettas were carried out with traditional knives, or also with guns and shotguns. Those who were arrested were also reached by Vendetta as soon as they got out of prison, even after 30 years (Sardinians have a very long memory and a lot of patience). Fortunately that bloody period has finished, even if the mountainous areas of central and north Sardinia are always quite unruly and the percentage of homicides is higher than in the rest of the island.

Traditional knives : Resorzas, Resolzas, Resorjas (from Latin "Rasorium" = Razor), also known as Pattadesas (from the village of Pattada) or Lussurzesas (from Santu Lussurgiu)

they are the sheperd's multitool, used for everything in the countryside, they are also very popular as collector's items, many of them are real pieces of craftmanship, with damasked or engraved blades

    Spoiler!

Traditional knives : Leppas (from Greek "Lépos" = lamina, metal foil)

the use of this kind of knife is prohibited since early XXth century, because is more similar to a short sword than to a knife, (it's long at least from 50cm to 70cm), but it's always very popular as collector's item

    Spoiler!
