    Clock making


    • Anglo-Saxon times: a unique type of candle clock invented by King Alfred the Great of Wessex. It utilized six candles which were made from 72 pennyweights of wax and were 12 inches tall and of equal thickness. Each candle had one inch markings which represented a block of time and burned away every four hours. The candles were placed in wooden cases with horn panels.
