i will never understand why people find this beautiful or entertaining

Organised fireworks held at professional displays often look beautiful and entertaining, (such as the annual awesome London fireworks held by the London Eye wheel... after the infamous chimes of the massive and historic Big Ben clock are heard in the City of Westminster... that's sequenced to music and takes 12 months of careful preparation and planning each year,) and also it draws in lots of tourists each year who watch the event.

I didn't think London's NYE's fireworks display this year was as good as 2011, 2012 and 2013, but still as good as Sydney in Australia, (they often like to steal the show each year along with London when the highlights of NYE fireworks from major world cities around the globe are shown on news videos and pictures,) and better than New York City's NYE displays shown on YT.

We have a good reason to celebrate 2017 as London won the bid to host the 2017 World Athletic Championships this year. Although on reflection of 2016, it was tragic and devastating that three major influential music icons - David Bowie, Prince, and George Michael - all passed away... although we have reason to celebrate the Brexit vote to leave the EU.

With that said, I admit to having a fear of fireworks and won't go anywhere near them - not even to professional displays. Both my sister and I were taken to watch a fireworks display with our parents when we were very small children and we both cried our eyes out and screamed in fear and hid in sheer terror and fright under our parents warm coats, and so they had to take us home early (saying they wish they hadn't paid to take us along and vowed to never take us to another fireworks event again! )

Even as an adult, when I first arrived in London, a South African man and his German girlfriend and two Australian females took me to watch a fireworks display in Highbury Park with them, and the man looked traumatised while he was looking up at the sky at the fireworks ... he said the bangs reminded him of being a soldier in a war-zone... and then the fireworks started flying near us towards a wall, so we all felt on-edge and nervous and left early.

I don't go out much in the dark evenings in the weeks surrounding Bonfire/Fireworks/Guy Fawkes Night on 5th of November, because some idiotic and undisciplined teenagers (usually chav and hooligan types) with irresponsible parents dangerously play with fireworks, (I've no idea how they get hold of them when they're underage,) and they set-off the loud bangers and firecrackers in public areas, which is extremely dangerous as they could hit someone, and it's also anti-social behaviour which is a criminal offence in the UK.... despite the emergency services on stand-by during Fireworks Night and the UK government putting out televised commercial warnings about firework injuries caused by teenagers playing with fireworks which have left children permanently disfigured, maimed, blinded, etc.

Fireworks go off like crazy around 5th November all over the UK each year, and in Westminster on Guy Fawke's Night, it sounds like a war-zone as the bangs are so loud.

I like watching the professional and organised NYE fireworks displays in the comfort of my warm home on YT (at a safe distance!) but I get scared of the loud bangs that go off outside in the dark cold night incase a firework could accidentally hit me, and it frightens pets and wildlife too.

Some British people complain that it's 'a waste of tax money' to fund fireworks that go up in smoke each year;- but £2million of fireworks in London is less than 50 pence contribution from each Londoner (considering there's over 8 million people in London) and it brightens up the cold dark night. It kicks-in the NY too.

It also brings in extra tourist revenue from all the tourists who visit London each year to see the beautiful and festive Yule season lights along Oxford St, the magical, enchanting and impressive window displays in Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty of London, Harvey Nichols, etc, and who visit the Winter Wonderland fairground and The Magical Ice Kingdom (full of sculptures made from ice) in London's Hyde Park, and who like to ice-skate to music by top DJ's outside beautiful Somerset House, and ice-skate on the outdoor ice-rink on the rooftop of the London Aquarium, and at the outdoor ice-rink by the skyscrapers in Canary Wharf/Docklands Islands, and at the Winter Wonderland outdoor ice-rink, and at the London Eye wheel ice-rink, etc, and then see the NYE fireworks, etc, before the big January sales in the massive department stores and the popular shopping season.
