I'd agree with Mortimer's response above. If Irish Travellers gave up their lifestyle and married into the larger population they would lose all their previous identity. Someone with a Roma ancestor will still carry their genetics. The Irish Travellers are not Gypsy but they have a different culture than the rest of the Irish. It just confuses the issue calling them Gypsy. I think they join allegiance in the UK due to similar discrimination.
