Default Greek surnames ending in -idis and Georgian surnames ending in -dze

Is there a link? I always assumed because Pontus is right next to Georgia, the ending -dze ("son of") on Georgian surnames got adapted onto Greek surnames as -idis, -iades, -iadis, and so on, which also mean "son of".

But people on here believe it to be the other way around, saying Pontic Greek is very ancient and conservative and it is more likely the Georgian ending comes from the Greek on the names.

    Which is correct?

    Coincidence.

Son of- endings exist in several languages and countries.

I highly doubt it is a coincidence that two NEIGHBORING populations that were in contact did not influence one another's surnames.

Get over it , -son of - in surnames is highly popular in too many languages to count.
It was the easier way to identify who you are . Just like there are surnames in many language that identify with proffessions, and/or physical characteristics.

Well those two endings look more or less the same and probably sound it too.

I highly doubt it has anything to do with Greek tbh, since "son of" surnames are found in virtually most languages. If you're seeking some kind of correlation, it could be from Persian 'zadeh' as well meaning 'descendant of' as well.

Dze , sounds like N-t-z-E. (e like in clever).
-ίδης sounds like I (bee) - th - (then) i (bee) s (serious)

You must have a serious problem to link those two endings , or you must have no understanding of either of those 2 languages.. Oh wait..

So, tell me , are you - at least a linguist - since you know neither Greek, nor Georgian?

So you say that Archimedes of Syracuse was Hellenized Georgian?

Surnames in -idis in Pontic Greeks and Greek Cypriots are rather an antique romanticization than a non-Greek influence...

If you ask Gus Portokalos, idis is from Albanian.

No, he was Sicilian. Probably Greek ancestry like the rest of us with whatever else had been Hellenized from there.
