There is no such thing as a charismatic idiot. Incompetence doesn't create the confidence someone needs to be charismatic. People like to think those in positions of power are just dumb because they disagree with them. In the real world incompetence means everyone around you suffers. Those people don't survive in their position unless they're kept there by people who are not effected by the consequences and for personal reasons that have nothing to do with results.

In the history of life on this planet, it has been mainly strength, speed, fangs, claws, and armor which have counted most toward survival. Intelligence has been a last resort of creatures too weak and slow to fight or to flee, insignificant little creatures which wouldn't even make a snack for Tyrannosaurus. They have survived by keeping out of the way of the dominant organisms of the fauna .
It was not until environmental factors with which they had nothing to do caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and even of the much smaller giant mammals of the early Cenozoic that the slow, weak, unarmored, fangless and clawless mammals
of the Pleistocene were able to emerge and become an (finally THE) important element of the fauna. Intelligence is important to us because, without it, we would be nothing but prey.
It is only very recently that the weak, using intelligence, have been able to hold their own against the strong.

Street smarts is DEFINITELY intelligence. In fact, I value it far more than book smarts. It isn't just experience, it's the ability to process and learn from your experience and to take cues and hints from your situation to get what you need.
I value street smarts far more than book smarts, in most cases. Not if I wanted quality scientific research done though.

While there are a certain number of people who are both book smart and street smart, when someone is too intellectual, like many college professor types, they lose grasp on the real world and aren't able to function normally in society.
This is one of the primary reasons why nerds don't usually get to fuck hot women.

I don't deny the value of street smarts. I was only questioning whether it can really be classed as a form of intelligence. So in terms of IQ, is street smarts a combination of interpersonal intelligence and intrapersonal intelligence (the ability to understand oneself)? I read an article on the "types" of IQ, and I wonder how this fits in.

Depends in what do you want to succeed. If you want to be a physicist or mathematician then IQ would definitely be the most important factor. If you want to be a manager it would not be the most important factor.your IQ score pales in comparison with your EQ, MQ, and BQ scores when it comes to predicting your success and professional achievement.
