    Default surname common or not?

Kyriakos is a common first name but is it a common surname?

Is there any region where it is more common than others?

Its quite common that Cypriots use patronymic surnames. However, that doesn't really indicate that he is Cypriot, since Kyriakou or f.e. Nikolaou is also common in Greece , too.

Diasporians usually use the -s in the end, even in females.
F.e. the correct should be Melina Kanakaridi , not Melina Kanakaridis.
Nia Vardalou , not Nia Vardalos
    etc

None ''takes'' it . Its up to them to use it that way, and not all do it . But within borders (Greece and Cyprus) , it isn't used.
Τhat was just my answer of why all the Kyriakos as last name that were found in out of Greece or Cyprus.
