Wind energy to be created using lamp-posts

An IT company has joined forces with a green technology firm to develop wind turbines which attach to lamp-posts.

The NVT Group's partnership with Own Energy Solutions is set to create 25 jobs over the next 12 months which it hopes will rise to about 300 within three years.

The scheme harvests wind using a small wind turbine and inverter system.

As a result, metered, clean energy could be fed directly into the National Grid.

The company said that as a result, each suitable lamp-post conversion would save half a ton of carbon being released into the atmosphere.

As part of the deal, which is worth about Ł3.5m over the next 15 years, Own Energy is relocating from Glasgow to NVT's headquarters in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire.

Stephen Park Brown, managing director of NVT Group, said: "We have a great record of working with winning teams and this new venture has every prospect of eclipsing our recent commissions. We believe that Own Energy can become a significant player in the renewables market both in the UK and beyond."

Total reliance on one source of energy is a problematic reliance on an energy - renewable energy just needs better storage. It's all great when it's sunny and windy, but on a cloudy calm day, the solar panels and the wind turbines are useless.

Not only a healthy power grid requires a diverse mix of sources and storage methods it also requires a healthy build out of transmission lines. In fact with enough storage and transmission lines we could eliminate fossil fuels and nuclear as we could rely on collection from solar towers in deserts, wind turbines on hills, and hydro on rivers.

But it's heavily geographically dependent. Wind energy is cheap in places like the Upper Midwest or Plains regions where it's windy and land is cheap. Just like Solar is more efficient in places where it's sunny a lot. So yeah - balanced portfolio of energy generation is the key, not just across alternative vs. traditional sources, but within them, too.

The northeast pulls electricity from hydro in Canada. The Hoover Dam pumps electricity out to States all around over thousands of miles of transmission lines.

The wind industry in Ontario is nothing but a giveaway. The technology is wrong for the application and would never be profitable. It would never exist because nobody would be stupid enough to throw their own money at it. In Ontario for instance we pay about 14 cents per kWh for wind.

Nuclear + bit of gas energy is easy to build to provide 100% of all power needs. It does with fewer deaths, less land use, less pollution and lower prices than wind + solar + storage.

Also, all the places on earth with the most wind penetration have the highest energy costs. South Australia, Germany, Denmark, etc. The places with the lowest costs use nuclear and/or hydro.

Three countries that have the cheapest electricity bills in Europe all make extensive use of nuclear power, these are France, which produces 85+% of its power using nuclear stations, Sweden, which produces half of its energy from nuclear power (the other half comes from hydro) and Finland, which produces ~30% of its energy from nuclear power (this will likely jump up much higher once the third nuclear power station in Pyhäjoki is completed).

The price of electricity in Ontario would indicate differently. The wind companies have been given contracts to provide electricity and get paid ABOVE market value for it. It's pure corruption. Not only that, wind power requires redundant infrastructure to provide power when there is no wind.

Sometimes the wind is blowing when we don't need power. Of course the contracts obligate Ontario to pay for whatever is produced, so we are literally paying the wind turbine companies to not produce power. It is absolute insanity. Beware the wind scam.
