With Internet, Gen Yers are more "global" minded. I'm not American and I've got a lot of American cultural references, and don't relate much to my home country contrary to older people...
I still relate very much to my country and am patriotic.
I've just noticed I have a greater connection with people I've met all across the world who are my own age than old people from my own country.

Even I feel like a creep having used flirty language at her address being literally ten years older.

I never understood why people like Pokemon, I really can't stand them; I grew up with the glorious Japanese cartoons during the 80s, (all the series about robots and similar)

You remember when the Simpsons were still a good show and the episodes were new. I only remember the same good old episodes being broadcast on our television when they were years old (episodes from the early 90s in the late 90s).

Relative to us, Eastern Europe lagged even more behind.

I remember 2004 when I first spoke to a Lithuanian online and he was overly excited at finally being able to speak to people from different countries with this newest invention, the internet. A déjà-vu for myself in 1998.

I know I sound like a stereotypical 'Dutchling' who obsesses too much about Anglo cultures. Ah well. It's our curse I guess.

I like the idea that the modern rise of the rightwing movments is the new counter culture...not sure if this applies to former commie states though.
According to Strauss and Howe, Second turnings (hippie era, the Sixties) are the totally opposite of Fourth turnings (now, where people are right wings and want order), the same way First Turnings (era of rebirth and enthousiasm, the early Fifties) are the complete opposite of Third Turnings (Gen X, nihilism, carelessness, the nineties)

Ok, maybe not. But you seem typically cynical and purposeless?
