Even in France, most of the time, we remove our shoes.
I would not like either someone come into my house with his/her shoes, especially if I just clearned the house

I wouldn't like guests to walk in my living room with their shoes on.
I had few westerns as guest in my home but all have taken shoes off, some were informed about before, to some we made known that is on our tradition to take shoes off when entering our threshold.

Yeah, the best is to offer slippers to people who are unused to that because some may find it weird to take shoes off.

It's not the custom in Uruguay. I'd do it myself*, but having a dog that takes 2 daily walks on the park makes it impossible.

*** I mean I would apply the no-shoe rule in my home. But I would never take mine off when visiting someone here as that would be super weird indeed.

I think that the remove shoes thing is more common in Muslim countries or Eastern Europe

In Western (Romance) Europe if you remove your shoes in someone's house you would be seen like a mad doing something bizarre
