Your doctor probably prescribed the codeine for cough relief. The drug is one of the most effective cough relievers produced. Codeine used to be the main ingredient in over-the-counter cough syrups, but it has been removed (as an ingredient) by most U. S. States' and European Countries' drug-enforcement agencies because of its potential for addiction and/or misuse. I believe that Canada is amongst one of the few Countries that still permits the [unregulated] sale of Codeine OTC.

Can you get low dose Buprenorphine OTC in the United Kingdom? I think it is called "Phenogesic" or "Subgesic" in Europe. Here, in the U.S., it is called "Suboxone" or "Subutex" and is used as an alternative to methadone for treatment of heroin and oxycodone/contin addiction.

As much as I am opposed to reckless over-taxation, I think that tax revenue currently gained from "Sin taxes" in the United States (Alcohol, cigarettes, etc) would be put to better use if spent on treatment programs for users.

The US Gov't makes nearly 200 BILLION dollars per year on these "Sin taxes", and the majority of the money is spent on prisons and law enforcement; and some of it is spent on silly anti-smoking and anti-drug commercials that are [in my opinion] counter-productive. There are over 1 million people in prison for non-violent drug offenses in the United States- THAT is pathetic.

Comparing alcohol and heroin together are like comparing apples with oranges.
Europeans and their kin have been exposed to alcohol for so long that it has become part of their cultural and social fabrics. We have even developed genetic resistance to alcohols negative effects.
Other peoples of the world are not so lucky, to have this genetic resistance.
Native Americans are terrible drunks. Many native Americans are instantly addicted to alcohol once they try it.

Do to the fact that black market heroin varies in strength and quality, it can be an addiction with lethal consequences.

I can speak from the experience of one who has had a few friends who became and then left this world as heroin addicts.

That said, I feel that heroin is an extremely powerful and dangerous drug that should never be legalized for street use.
