Default Europe's largest battery factory to open in Sweden

NorthVolt AB, the Swedish company founded by a former Tesla Inc. executive, wants to cut the cost of storing power in half with a 4 billion euro ($4.2 billion) lithium-ion battery factory.

The Stockholm-based company wants to raise 1 billion euros by 2018, when it plans to break ground on a factory during the second half of the year, according to founder Peter Carlsson, who was Tesla’s former head of sourcing and supply chains. NorthVolt will announce a shortlist of possible Swedish manufacturing sites in about a month.

“Europe will be a very important market for energy storage,” Carlsson said by phone. “There is a huge need for back-up power. There is also a sizable auto industry that has made big promises to go electric.”

Energy storage is seen as the missing link in the world’s transition to a zero-carbon economy. Batteries can fill power gaps from intermittent solar and wind energy. Lithium-ion packs are also key for automakers banking on a new generation of plug-in vehicles.

My hometown is one of the candidates to get this factory I hope it will open there! It would mean so much for the whole region, as they need between 2500-3000 workers. My hometown is a pretty good candidate, as the location they have talked about in the town has a large harbour, good railway communications and cheap electricity from all the local hydropower plants. Also a huge smelter plant that can smelt down lithium batteries and in general many factories with a lot of knowledge in metals and eletricity.

Please post a report here when you see who will work in the factory. I read in the news a while ago that the corporation wanted to ensure that they will get labour at a low cost.

I will apply for work there when they plan to open (I currently study in a very related field and will be finished this spring). And then I can report who will work there. The local people as I know them obviously want Swedes who are ready to work and develop our dying part of Sweden.

Not since the 30s people in the municipality has been this optimistic to the future. Back then it was the Boliden gold and when they found the mineral rich Skellefteå field. Which lead to our biggest private factory of the region, the Rönnskär smelter plant:

I want to move back home when they open the factory and do my best to develop a new base industry. Not only for the town, but for all of Sweden.
