How Similar are Spanish and Portuguese?

For me, written Portuguese is very easy to understand to any native Spanish speaker, even if he/she doesn't have any previous knowledge about Portuguese, but somewhat hard to understand it when hearing it, because the Portuguese pronunciation is very different from Spanish pronunciation.

However, a native Spanish speaker without previous knowledge of Portuguese, would still understand at least something like 50-70% of what they're saying, when hearing it.

I don't even speak portugese and I understood pretty much what you said.

Phonologically very different, but very similar as most Portuguese find Spanish a breeze. But Portuguese were partially raised watching Spanish shows on television, or weren't they. Immersion does help a lot.

Not at all, Portugueses don't really watch Spanish shows, movies or songs. It is just intuitive for us, we can understand fairly well the Castilian accent.
