For me, written Portuguese is very easy to understand to any native Spanish speaker, even if he/she doesn't have any previous knowledge about Portuguese, but somewhat hard to understand it when hearing it, because the Portuguese pronunciation is very different from Spanish pronunciation.

However, a native Spanish speaker without previous knowledge of Portuguese, would still understand at least something like 50-70% of what they're saying, when hearing it.

While written, there's barely any difference for me, but when spoken, then the fun begins. One has to sometimes think real hard before saying something.

Phonologically very different, but very similar as most Portuguese find Spanish a breeze. But Portuguese were partially raised watching Spanish shows on television, or weren't they. Immersion does help a lot.

Have you basic knowledge of Spanish or it was just intuition?

Not at all, Portugueses don't really watch Spanish shows, movies or songs. It is just intuitive for us, we can understand fairly well the Castilian accent.
