Croats are historically smooth people from a militaristic point of view. Serbs were more successful than them both in pitch battle combats and state building organization (Bulgars were best in the Balkans ofc before Slavization).
It's worth noting that in the history of Turks, the last steppe-style pitch battle victory (light cavalry operation) was against the Croats in 1493.
The Croat infantry and heavy cavalry forces were routed by numerically inferior Turkish light cavalry (Akıncı forces: Turkmen tribal regiments) led by Bosniak command who knew the geographical area.
It was a complete Ottoman victory and utter Croat defeat.
Some Croats might tell as means of propaganda that their nation 'resisted, against the Ottomans but that's not the reality.
Following this battle the border between Bosnia and Croatia was definitely drawn.
Croatia survived later through Hungarian and Austrian protectorate status they got.
To summarise, Croats are overrated for their Ustasha recent history and the slaying of some 'Untermensch, Serbs in concentration camps. Croats are smooth people with a military history not so different than, let's say, Slovaks or Estonians.
In this sense the Croats are far from old Panonian Avars.

Why did Croatia become Catholic and not Orthodox?

Well I explained that already, our Dux (Duke) Branimir, the ruler of Croatian state in 9th century decided to put his 100% loyalty to Vatican (Rome) instead to Constantinople, it was his personal decision, because of that decision all Croats also were ofcourse Catholics after that, means we went for Rome instead for Constantinople.
And btw in those times there wasn't any true danger from Orthodoxy, because of Aachen peace in 812 AD between Franks and Byzantines, but never the less, Branimir decided to pick Cahtolicism for Croats, and he was building like crazy catholic churches in his time troughout Croatia, carving his name and name of Pope (always on Latin), and Pope love him for that and accepted Croats as one truly faithful ppl to Vatican (one of the most faithful) till this day, from Branimir till this day.
Anyway, read first post and what Pope was writing to Branimir from one of his letters

Yes, my bad. I skimmed through it too quickly.
Btw, do you know anything about the Krashovani? Are they of Serb origin or Croat origin?
I thought they were of Croat origin (because of something on Google Books), but another user says that they're of Serb origin: https://www.theapricity.com/forum/sh...96#post4805296
