Even the smallest street in Porto hides charms worth discovering! This is Rua Afonso Martins Alho, has only a few meters, but is part of the legacy of the man who gave origin to the very traditional expression of Porto "fino como o Alho" [smart as Alho (garlic)].
Do you know the story behind this expression?

Afonso Martins Alho, merchant from Porto (14th century), together with Gomes de Limpas, the merchant Limpas, was sent by D. Afonso IV to London, in 1353, to negotiate and sign the first Anglo-Portuguese commercial treaty. The two envoys limited themselves to obtaining from the English sovereign an annual safe-conduct for all Portuguese merchants and ships in British ports.

Afonso Martins Alho returned to London again as messenger and procurator of merchants and communities in the maritime cities of Lisbon and Porto to celebrate a trade treaty, consisting of eight articles, valid for 50 years, and signed in London on October 20, 1353 .

It is said that, thanks to Afonso Martins Alho's sagacity and great skill as a negotiator, from a certain point onwards, the expression "fino como o alho" or "fino que nem um alho" started to be used, passing on, ending being incorporated into the Portuguese language, meaning with it that a certain individual or personality in question is very smart, very shrewd and cunning.

Coimbra. In the image you see the Santa Cruz Church founded in 1131, and where the tombs of the two first portuguese kings are located.

    Palácio Estoi - Faro

The Palace of Estoi was formerly known as “Jardim de Estoy” (Garden of Estoy) which reveals their importance in this sumptuous complex. These extensive gardens are developed in three planes, decorated with lakes, statues, busts, rich tile panels and other architectural elements, in a "succession of events" that end in the orange grove, next to the large gate of the main entrance.
