cats do the same. dogs usually can only lick their genitalia but the more flexible cats can reach their anus
also most dogs are potty trained while cats do it in the home. if anything it's owning a cat (in a urban area) an abuse and dirty.

Keeping a dog indoors is disgusting...I can smell houses that have had dogs inside them. It is disgusting and also abusive to the dog.

I suppose, in Canada either you allow your dog to be indoor or you'll find it total frozen outdoor in the morning, being that fact not disgusting but protector, always in my humble opinion. Exactly the same would happen with a camel.
