TV2 ran an article on animal abuse in Vollsmose, a predominantly Muslim part of Odense. Kattens Værn, a cat charity, got 20-25 reports of grave abuse in the suburb last year, including kittens having their heads and limbs torn apart. Many more incidents, it is believed, remain unreported. Therese S. Wilbert, director of Kattens Værn, says incidents include cats, particularly kittens, being skinned alive, having their eyes gouged, heads and limbs ripped off or spines crushed.

Dyrenes Beskyttelse, Denmark's Animal Welfare Society, will no longer respond to calls from Vollsmose after a female worker was attacked by a group of young men in March. "It's sad" says Henrik Bucholdtz, director of the society, "but under no circumstances do we want our people to fear for their safety when treating an animal in need". Instead, the society urges citizens to get the police involved in cases of abuse. The incident in March was caught on video and reported to the police.
