Default Canadian Folk Music

I was inspired by Aemma's thread about Dégénération to make a thread for Canadian folk music or folk rock. Basically, feel free to post songs and discuss anything related to the subject. Also, if you know of songs that are perhaps not entirely folk, but touche on Canadian culture/history feel free to add them.

Personally, I quite like Le Vent du Nord, though admittedly only have Maudite Moisson. My favourite song by them is called Grand-Pit/Reel à deux têtes but unfortunately I could not find it online so I will have to rip it to my computer while I'm at home for a few days at the end of the month. We also have some cds of the first recordings made in Québec during the 19th century that are interesting to listen to and will try to rip to add here as well.

    Les trois frères Roy

Another band I quite like is Great Big Sea, the folk rock band from Newfoundland.

    Old Polina

    The Night Pat Murphy Died

Émile Benoit is a fiddler from Newfoundland`s French coast that was introduced to me by a specialist in Franco-Newfoundland folklore who took me under his wing my first year of university. One day he showed me a video on French Newfoundland's Émile Benoit (may they both rest in peace) and I was quite drawn to his music ever since. It is not often that one sees such a great representation of French Newfoundland's folk music. Unfortunately, once more there is not much online and I was able to find only one short clip of Émile playing a little jig.

And a nice song by Les Cowboys Fringants called Les étoiles filantes. The band can be a little hit or miss as their politics can leave a little to be desired (particularly some lyrics in the song Lettre à Lévesque managed to piss me off), but this song is quite nice and gives a sense of nostalgia.

I look forward to seeing other's post So perhaps this thread can also serve as a little way to say "je me souviens" in a Canadian nation that is quickly forgetting its roots.

Canadian Railroad Trilogy by Gordon Lightfoot

An awesome song. In the US, we would probably say it has strong Manifest Destiny overtones, but I am not sure if Canadians consider this the same sort of thing.

I was listening to Les Cowboys Fringants just today. Here's their Plus Rien:

I'm also a big fan of Acadian fiddle music. Les Girls make a lot of good music:

Here's another Acadian group that is more contemporary, Grand Derangement:

I can't believe people posted Acadian music without posting Suroît.

Or any music in English without Stan Rogers.

Get a few drinks into me and I'll sing these songs.

Thought I'd add this one. Can't believe I forgot it in my first post.

Ben câline! J'ai tout manqué ça! Pardonnes-moi YV! C'est un super bon thread!

Well we can't really talk about French Canadian roots music without mentioning La Bolduc. This is as old-style French Canadian as it gets in my humble opinion. I have fond memories of my memère singing this one particular song during the holidays:

We would be quite remiss to not include one of the supreme Canadian folk artists of our time, Ms. Joni Mitchell. An amazing voice, engaging music and lyrics...life seen through a poet's eyes....
