You have to have energy when you go to lift.If you go hungry you won't have the same horsepower,and will not have a quality workout.
Also HGH starts to release when you are working out,along with amino acids,and L-Carnitine acids,and they need fuel to pump into your muscle.If your tank is empty you spike this system and will not benefit growth.
Before gym meals are a must if you want to grow.
