Well, I'd make a distinction between clearly local surnames and wide-spread ones such as those two, which might have been for centuries there or might not. That's the problem with many of the surnames in -ez. Specially when in Galician-Portuguese the ending -es/ez/is/iz exists too in graphic old variants.
It sounds Italian, but apparently Maradona is a local surname from Lugo province.
