A double-barrelled surname may also be called a hyphenated surname.
In British tradition, a double surname is heritable. It is mostly taken to preserve a family name which would have become extinct due to the absence of male descendants bearing the name, connected to the inheritance of a family estate.
Bowes-Lyon
Following the marriage in 1767 of the 9th Earl, John Lyon to the rich heiress Mary Eleanor Bowes, the family name was changed to Bowes by Act of Parliament.
The 10th Earl changed the name to Lyon-Bowes. The 13th Earl, Claude, changed the order of the surname to Bowes-Lyon.
